Nominations for 2023 Awards now open
Recognizing deserving scientists is at the core of EAG's mission. There are many discussions around the diversity of awardees, but as highlighted by Derek Vance, EAG President, in the blog post “EAG needs you to nominate a colleague for an award today!”, the key issue is the lack of nominations.
The EAG Award Nomination Committee is currently working hard to identify potential candidates and nominators, but we need the help of all the community to create a diverse pool of candidates.
Nomination deadline for Fellows: 31 October Nomination deadline for Urey, Science Innovation and Houtermans Awards: 15 November

After two years of interruption due to the pandemic, the EAG-GS Outreach Program is back and we are very excited to announce that Sebastian Doetterl, a physical geographer with a special focus on soil development, will be visiting 4 institutions in Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda this November.
This program is entirely funded by EAG and GS to promote geochemistry in under-represented regions of the world.
Geochemists, depending on their location, may have limited access to the resources, opportunities, or expertise necessary to fulfill their professional goals.
This program aims to connect these professionals with mentors across the globe who can assist, guide, and provide insights to aid in achieving these goals. For a start, the program will focus on three activities and will be dedicated to geochemists from low-income or lower middle-income countries as defined by the World Bank. Read more and apply as mentee or mentor.

Microbiobial Ecology at ISME18: An EAG Sponsored Student Reports Back
[By Margaret Cramm] I am a PhD student studying the affect of permafrost thaw on microorganisms in permafrost in Svalbard. Like many ecology studies, my work brings together many topics such as biology, geography, geology, and climate. This August I was excited to attend and present my work at a leading conference in the field of microbial ecology, ISME18...
Origin of radiogenic 129Xe variations in carbonaceous chondrites
Carbonaceous chondrites are pristine witnesses of the formation of the solar system. Among them, the carbon-rich Tarda and Tagish Lake meteorites are thought to have sampled very distant regions of the outer circumsolar disk (Hiroi et al., 2001 ). Here, we...
Siderophores and the formation of cerium anomalies in anoxic environments
Microbes and plants affect the mobility of trace elements and may have done so since the onset of “life” on Earth. The recognition of such bio-effects on early Earth or Mars remains challenging and the impact of organisms on element mobilisation...

Can oceans save us? Part I: Using oceans to pull more CO2 from the air [Podcast]
[ClimateNow] More than 4 billion years ago, when Earth was still in its infancy, the atmosphere held more than 100,000 times the amount of CO2 it does today. Ever so slowly, that CO2 was absorbed into the oceans, where it reacted with rocks of...
