2021 Award nomination deadlines approaching
EAG members have just a few weeks remaining to nominate a deserving geochemist for one of the annual EAG awards (Urey, Houtermans or Science Innovation) or for the GS/EAG Geochemistry Fellowship or the R. Berner Lecture.
Several changes have been made to nomination requirements and eligibility for the 2021 awards, and nominators are encouraged to consider achievements in the broadest sense. See the nominations page for further information on the different awards and how to submit a nomination.
Geochemistry Fellows and R. Berner Lecture nominations deadline: 31 October
EAG Award nominations deadline: 15 November

EAG Short Course and Conference Sponsorship: apply by 30 November
Providing access to training opportunities for students is a core mission of the EAG. The Short Course and Conference Sponsorship Program is open to EAG members organizing a short course or small conference in Europe focused on special topics or techniques from the broad field of geochemistry.
The program provides up to 200€ per student to support student attendance at the event. For the 2021 program, applications for online as well as hybrid and in-person events will be considered.
If you a member organizing an event in 2021, submit your application by 30 November 2020.

Zirconium isotopic composition of the mantle through time
Zirconium isotopes have the potential to trace both magmatic differentiation and crustal evolution, as well as deep Earth processes. Zirconium is compatible in bridgmanite where it has a higher coordination number than in silicate melt, implying that Zr isotopes could be fractionated during magma ocean crystallisation. We report the Zr isotopic composition of 31 komatiites...

The vanadium isotope composition of Mars: implications for planetary differentiation in the early solar system
The V isotope composition of martian meteorites reveals that Bulk Silicate Mars (BSM) is characterised by δ51V = −1.026 ± 0.029 ‰ (2 s.e.) and is thus ∼0.06 ‰ heavier than chondrites and ∼0.17 ‰ lighter than Bulk Silicate Earth (BSE)...

Wehrlites from continental mantle monitor the passage and degassing of carbonated melts
Continental rifting has been linked to the thinning and destruction of cratonic lithosphere and to the release of enough CO2 to impact the global climate. This fundamental plate tectonic process facilitates the infiltration and mobilisation...

Fate of organic compounds during transformation of ferrihydrite in iron formations
The absence of organic compounds from Precambrian iron formations (IF) challenges the hypothesis of the biogenic origin of IF. Here we address the fate of adsorbed organic compounds during transformation from...

Hunting For The Crystalline Clues Of A Volcano’s Eruption [Podcast]
[Science Friday] This story is a part of Breakthrough, a short film anthology from Science Friday and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) that follows women working at the forefront of their fields.
We notice volcanoes when they erupt. It’s hard to miss the huge, dramatic plumes of ash, or red glowing lava spewing high into the air. But the...

Scientists find gas linked to life in atmosphere of Venus
[The Guardian] Traces of a pungent gas that waft through the clouds of Venus may be emanations from aerial organisms – microbial life, but not as we know it. Astronomers detected phosphine 30 miles up in the planet’s atmosphere and have failed to identify a process other than life that could...

Climate crisis 233m years ago reshaped life on Earth, say scientists
[The Guardian] A mass extinction event sparked by a sudden shift in climate more than 200m years ago reshaped life on Earth and ushered in the age of the dinosaurs, scientists claim. An international team reviewed geological evidence and the fossil record and found that enormous volcanic...

Nitrous oxide emissions pose an increasing climate threat, study finds
[Science Daily] Rising nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are jeopardizing the climate goals of the Paris Agreement, according to a major new study by an international team of scientists. The growing use of nitrogen fertilizers in the production of food worldwide is increasing atmospheric concentrations of...

Salty ponds may be under Mars' icy surface, raising prospect of Martian life
[The Guardian] A network of salty ponds may be gurgling beneath Mars’ south pole alongside a large underground lake, raising the prospect of tiny, swimming Martian life. Italian scientists reported their findings Monday, two years after identifying what they believed to be a large buried lake...

Elusive photonic crystals come a step closer
[Nature News & Views] In 1987, the physicist Eli Yablonovitch predicted that materials called photonic bandgap crystals (PBCs) would enable light to be handled in the way existing microcircuits handled electrical signals[1]. Since then, one- and two-dimensional cousins of PBCs have been...

Europe is building a ‘digital twin’ of Earth to revolutionize climate forecasts
[Science] The European Union is finalizing plans for an ambitious “digital twin” of planet Earth that would simulate the atmosphere, ocean, ice, and land with unrivaled precision, providing forecasts of floods, droughts, and fires from days to years in advance. Destination Earth, as the effort is called, won’t...
