EAG Co-Sponsored Event: 8th International Clumped Isotope Workshop - Abstract deadline 15 July

The 8th International Clumped Isotope Workshop (ICIW), co-sponsored by the EAG, will take place 19-21 September 2022 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Delegates meet every ~1.5 years at the ICIW to discuss methodological development and inter-laboratory standardization, learn about exciting new applications, and share ideas. The workshops are structured around several sessions of lectures and posters, with a large portion of the time being devoted to formal and informal discussion.

Abstract submission is now open and closes on 15 July. Registration is open until 5 August and financial assistance will be available to selected students.

Academia–Industry Transitions: Q&A with Kim Dalby

Many geochemists have transitioned from academia to industry, or vice-versa, during their careers. The EAG Communications Committee recently interviewed geochemists who made the move, to find out how they made the transition and to ask their advice for others in the community who may be considering a similar change. Here, we hear from Dr. Kim Nicole Dalby, Principal Scientist at Topsoe A/S.

Constant iron isotope composition of the upper continental crust over the past 3 Gyr

The Fe isotopic composition of twenty four glacial diamictite composites with depositional ages ranging from the Mesoarchean to the Palaeozoic serve as proxies of the average upper continental crust (UCC) and can be used to track how δ56Fe may have...

Neodymium isotopes trace marine provenance of Arctic sea ice

Radiogenic neodymium (Nd) isotopes (ɛNd) have the potential to serve as a geochemical tracer of the marine origin of Arctic sea ice. This capability results from pronounced ɛNd differences between the distinct marine and riverine sources, which feed...

Sulfur solubility in a deep magma ocean and implications for the deep sulfur cycle

The Earth could have experienced sulfide segregation during its differentiation due to sulfur (S) saturation within a magma ocean. The relative timing of sulfide saturation during magma ocean crystallisation is strongly dependent on the solubility of S at...

Melting experiments on Fe-C-O to 200 GPa; liquidus phase constraints on core composition

Recent theoretical calculations suggested that carbon and oxygen are important light elements in the Earth’s inner and outer core, respectively. We performed melting experiments on the Fe-C-O system and obtained ternary liquidus phase...

Jupiter is up to 9% Rock and Metal, Which Means it Ate a lot of Planets in its Youth

[UniverseToday] Jupiter is composed almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. The amounts of each closely conform to the theoretical quantities in the primordial solar nebula. But it also contains other heavier elements, which astronomers...

Diatoms are under threat of decline due to ocean acidification, study shows

[Phys.org] While calcifying organisms like oysters and corals have difficulty forming their shells and skeletons in more acidic seawater, diatoms have been considered less susceptible to the effects of ocean acidification—a chemical change...

Styrofoam-munching superworms could hold key to plastic upcycling

[Phys.org] Packing material, disposable cutlery, CD cases: Polystyrene is among the most common forms of plastic, but recycling it isn't easy and the vast majority ends up in landfills or finds its way to the oceans where it threatens marine life....
