Goldschmidt2022 has begun! If you are attending in person, come and meet us at the GS/EAG lounge in the Exhibit Hall to find out about our activities, browse publications, discover our membership benefits, and pick up some goodies. Delegates are also warmly invited to attend the EAG Members Reception in room 306B on Wednesday 7 July at 19:30 HST. Geochemists, depending on their location, may have limited access to the resources, opportunities, or expertise necessary to fulfill their professional goals.
This program aims to connect these professionals with mentors across the globe who can assist, guide, and provide insights to aid in achieving these goals. For a start, the program will focus on three activities and will be dedicated to geochemists from low-income or lower middle-income countries as defined by the World Bank. Read more and apply as mentee or mentor!
Delegates meet every ~1.5 years at the ICIW to discuss methodological development and inter-laboratory standardization, learn about exciting new applications, and share ideas. The workshops are structured around several sessions of lectures and posters, with a large portion of the time being devoted to formal and informal discussion.
Abstract submission is now open and closes on 15 July. Registration is open until5 August and financial assistance will be available to selected students.
[Interview by EAG Communications Committee] Many geochemists have transitioned from academia to industry, or vice-versa, during their careers. The EAG Communications Committee recently interviewed geochemists who made the move, to find out how they made the transition and to ask their advice for others...
Fieldwork on the Revillagigedo Islands: the challenge and bliss of a geochemical field campaign in a remote uninhabited Mexican UNESCO National Parc
[by Janne Koornneef] Geochemistry inherently involves significant laboratory work, but a project often starts in the field to collect the target geological samples. The various aspects of geochemical research, and the field work specifically, make it the best job in the world I think. However, organization and...
The geologists, miners, and geochemists of ancient West African merchant empires
[by Ernest Chi Fru] Mansa Musa, the celebrated Sultan of the 14th century West African merchant empire of Mali (Figure 1), ruled for 25 years, from 1312 to 1337 AD. His prosperous and philanthropic reign has puzzled historians to this day, with word out that he is perhaps the richest man who ever...
Dominance of benthic flux of REEs on continental shelves: implications for oceanic budgets
Rare earth elements (REEs) are powerful tools to track oceanic biogeochemical processes. However, our understanding of REE sources is incomplete, leading to controversial interpretations regarding their oceanic cycling. Continental margin sediments are...
How long for plastics to decompose in the deep sea?
The deep sea floor is recognised as one of the most important final destinations for plastic debris. It is not clear whether the plastic debris in the deep sea could be degraded. Likewise, little is known about how long plastics might last at the deep sea floor. A total of...
Explosion of life on Earth linked to heavy metal act at planet’s centre
[The Guardian] At the centre of the Earth, a giant sphere of solid iron is slowly swelling. This is the inner core and scientists have recently uncovered intriguing evidence that suggests its birth half a billion years ago may have played a key role in...
Making minerals: Crushed, zapped, boiled and baked
[BBC] When the penguins poop on Antarctica's Elephant Island, a little bit of magic happens in the soil. Chemical reactions produce a dull brown mineral called spheniscidite. It's unique and reflects the special conditions that exist only in that locality...
Mars Rovers Will Need to Dig Deeper If They Want to Find Evidence of Life
[Universe Today] The search for life—even ancient life—on Mars is trickier than we thought. In a recent study published in the journal Astrobiology, researchers have determined that NASA’s Mars Perseverance (Percy) Rover will have to dig two...
Martian Meteorite Upsets Planet Formation Theory [Press Release]
[University of California Davis] A new study of an old meteorite contradicts current thinking about how rocky planets like the Earth and Mars acquire volatile elements such as hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and noble gases as they form...
Volcano’s Eruption Will Help Scientists Plot Weather, Climate
[LabManager] As it captivated people around the world, the January eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano gave scientists a once-in-a-lifetime chance to study how the atmosphere works, unlocking keys to better predict the....
[Washington Post] Welcome to The Work Day, a series that charts a single day in various women’s working lives — from gallery owners to stay-at-home parents to chief executives. In this installment, we hear from Renée Zurui Wang, a PhD ...
