Reminder: Complete the Global Geochemistry Community Survey

Many thanks to everyone who has completed the Global Geochemistry Community Survey. If you haven't yet done so, please do take a moment to participate in the survey to help us better understand the international geochemical community, build knowledge and enhance prospects for all geochemists. The survey is completely anonymous, and takes just 10-15 minutes of your time.

To help us achieve the highest possible participation, please also share access to this survey among your geochemistry colleagues within and outside academia. Geochemists who are not members of the European Association of Geochemistry and/or Geochemical Society are invited to contribute too.

New Editors at Geochemical Perspectives Letters

We are very pleased to welcome Andreas Kappler (Eberhard-Karls-University Tuebingen) and Francis McCubbin (NASA Johnson Space Center) to the Geochemical Perspectives Letters editorial board.

Andreas Kappler and the Tübingen Geomicrobiology group investigate microbial formation and transformation of minerals and the consequences for trace metals, nutrients and greenhouse gases in the environment. To answer their research questions they use laboratory experiments and field studies and apply a variety of analytical techniques including spectroscopy, (electron) microscopy and molecular biology.

Francis McCubbin is a Research Scientist and Astromaterials Curator at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. His research interests include determining the abundances and roles of volatiles (C, H2O, F, Cl, S) in magmatic systems within terrestrial planetary bodies and their consequences for the petrological evolution of Mercury, Earth, Moon, Mars, and asteroids. This work is accomplished through a combination of experimental petrology, mineralogy, and analysis of astromaterials using a variety of micro-beam analytical techniques.

Call for Student Representatives of the EAG DEI Committee

The EAG Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee are searching for two active Student Representatives to join our friendly and passionate committee. You can find out more about our work here

All postgraduate students working in the field of geochemistry at the time of application are eligible to apply, and we encourage applications from people in nations not currently represented among EAG DEI Committee members. Student Representatives will serve 1-year to 3-year terms on the committee, with the option to leave the committee at any time in the intervening period.

Nitrogen isotope fractionation during magma ocean degassing: tracing the composition of early Earth’s atmosphere

The evolution of the nitrogen concentration and isotopic composition during the degassing of Earth’s magma ocean, and thus in the primitive atmosphere, is key to understanding how habitable conditions...

A novel carbon cycle turbulence index identifies environmental and ecological perturbations

Earth’s history has been characterised by complex interactions between life and the environment, which are often difficult to resolve. Here, we propose a new carbon cycle turbulence index (CTindex), based on...

Early differentiation of magmatic iron meteorite parent bodies from Mn–Cr chronometry

Magmatic iron meteorite groups such as IIAB, IIIAB and IVA, represent the largest sampling of extraterrestrial core material from the earliest accreted distinct planetary bodies in the solar system. Chromium isotope...

New study of 1980s Mars meteorite debunks proof of ancient life on planet

[The Guardian]  A four billion-year-old meteorite from Mars that caused a splash here on Earth decades ago contains no evidence of ancient, primitive Martian life after all, scientists have said. In 1996, a Nasa-led team announced that organic compounds in the rock appeared to have been left...

Ancient Air Bubbles Trapped in Antarctic Ice Point to Cause of Oxygen Decline

[SciTechDaily] Glacial erosion likely caused atmospheric oxygen levels to dip over past 800,000 years. An unknown culprit has been removing oxygen from our atmosphere for at least 800,000 years, and an analysis of air bubbles preserved in Antarctic ice for up to 1.5 million years has revealed the likely suspect...

China’s Lander Has Detected Water on the Moon

[Universe Today] China’s Chang’e-5 lunar lander has found evidence of hydroxyl (OH) on the Moon. Hydroxyl is a close chemical cousin of water, H2O. While several other orbital missions have detected OH on the Moon previously, Chang’e-5 marks the first time it has been detected by a spacecraft...

Earth's Insides Are Cooling Faster Than We Thought, And It Will Mess Things Up

[Sciencealert] Earth formed 4.5 billion years or so ago. Ever since then, it's been slowly cooling on the inside. While the surface and atmosphere temperatures fluctuate over the eons (and yes, those external temperatures are currently warming), the molten interior – the beating heart of our planet...

The Early Earth was Really Horrible for Life

[Universe Today] Earth has had a long and complex history since its formation roughly 4.5 billion years ago. Initially, it was a molten ball, but eventually, it cooled and became differentiated. The Moon formed from a collision between Earth and a protoplanet named Theia (probably), the oceans formed...

The mineralogy of the rocks determines how deadly a meteorite impact is
