Academics working on carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects
To address the pressing challenge of global warming and its associated impacts, numerous scientists are collaborating with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) companies to curb CO2 emissions. In this Reactions, Rebecca Tyne (Isometric) and Noah Planavasky (Professor at Yale; senior contributing scientist at Environmental Defense Fund and Cascade Climate) will lead discussions on sharing their experience working on CDR projects from an academic perspective.
EAG Early Career Science Ambassador Program Next deadline: 1 March
This program provides funding to Early Career Scientists based in Europe who wish to attend conferences outside Europe, and to Early Career Scientists in any country who plan to attend a fully virtual or hybrid conference remotely. Supported scientists attending a conference in person will have 50% of their expenses covered by EAG, up to 1500 Euros.
Through a series of hands-on workshops, participants will get familiar with state-of-the-art tools and approaches for assessing land use change effects on plant-soil systems in tropical regions.
Careers Outside Academia: Evelyne Adjei Mensah, Founder and CEO of Trust in isotopes
[Interview with Evelyne Adjei Mensah, by Thaïs Couasnon] What is your job? I am the founder and CEO of a company called “Trust in isotopes”. The goal is to support companies in rebuilding trust among consumers....
Reliability of Raman analyses of CO2-rich fluid inclusions as a geobarometer at Kīlauea
Interpreting signals of volcanic unrest requires knowledge of the architecture of the magmatic system, particularly the depths at which magmas are stored. Such information can be vital to help predict changes in eruptive style...
The key role of bedrock composition in the formation of carbonates on Mars
Martian carbonates are fundamental minerals for understanding the geochemical and climatic evolution of the planet and the search for potential life, representing one of the key objectives for the Perseverance rover...
Rhenium elemental and isotopic variations at magmatic temperatures
Recent analytical advances in the measurement of rhenium (Re) isotope ratios allow its potential as a palaeoredox and chemical weathering proxy to be explored. However, a successful isotopic proxy...
Magnesiowüstite as a major nitrogen reservoir in Earth’s lowermost mantle
Ferropericlase (Mg,Fe)O is after bridgmanite the most abundant phase in the lower mantle. The ultralow velocity zones above the core-mantle boundary may contain very Fe-rich magnesiowüstite (Fe,Mg)O, possibly...
“Things We’ve Never Seen Before” – New Findings Unveil True Nature of Wild 2 Comet
[SciTechDaily] Eighteen years following the return of NASA’s Stardust mission to Earth, which brought back the first samples from a known comet, the true nature of that icy object is coming into focus...
Ice ages were not as dry as we thought, according to surprising new Australian cave study
[The Conversation] During ice ages, dry, frozen terrain extended over much of northern Europe, Asia and North America. Many plants and animals retreated from these desolate, harsh landscapes and sought refuge in pockets of more hospitable...
Ancient island submerged off Brazilian coast was (and may still be) mineral-rich
[Mining.com] The Rio Grande Rise (RGR), a possibly continental basaltic plateau and chain of seamounts now submerged in the South Atlantic Ocean some 1,200 kilometres from the coast of Brazil, was once a giant tropical island, rich in minerals...
Deep-sea mining could contribute to increasing the scale, speed of climate change – study
[Mining.com] Disturbing the seabed, through activities such as trawling and deep-sea mining, could increase the scale and speed of climate change, according to new research. In a paper published in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science...
Soda Lakes: The Missing Link in the Origin of Life?
[SciTechDaily] Charles Darwin suggested the possibility of life originating in a “warm little pond” with a suitable mix of chemicals and energy. New research conducted by the University of Washington and published in...
Scientists propose an updated time scale scheme of the Earth's moon
[phys.org] The moon's evolutionary history is divided into three distinct phases based on the temporal interplay of exogenic and endogenic processes in altering the moon. These phases are defined as Eon-level time scale units, which provide insights...
Q14: "The Quaternary in all its states: land, sea, ice" - Registration open until 15 February
The 14th International conference on the Quaternary will be held in Rennes on 26 February-1 March. Aiming to bring together scientific communities working on the Quaternary, the “Q14” conference will be structured around nine sessions and a round table, which will highlight the variety of themes and research objectives of French Quaternarians. Late registration deadline: 15 February
2024 EAGE Annual - Early registration deadline 15 March
The 85th EAGE Annual Conference and Exhibition program includes exhibition, workshops, short courses, field trips, and community & student activities.
