RockArchive: What is – the Atmosphere?

[by Kärt Paiste and Ichiko Sugiyama] Q1: What is the atmosphere? A: The atmosphere is a layer of gas covering a planet and other material bodies. Gravity prevents gases that make up the atmosphere from escaping to space (aka. the cosmos). Note: Gravity is a natural force of attraction between all things with mass or energy.

Q2: What is the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere today (also known as air)?

Enrichment mechanism of trace elements in pyrite under methane seepage

Authigenic pyrite is an important recorder for methane seepage. During methane seepage, the sulfur and iron isotopic composition of pyrite will change, allowing it to be used as an indicator to identify methane seepage. However, the dissimilar behaviour of...

Enhanced organic carbon burial intensified the end-Ordovician glaciation

The end-Ordovician (Hirnantian) glaciation, causally linked with the first of five Phanerozoic mass extinction events, is the first major Phanerozoic-glaciation with short duration and paradoxically happened under a relative greenhouse-condition...

Early precipitated micropyrite in microbialites: A time capsule of microbial sulfur cycling

Microbialites are organosedimentary rocks that have occurred throughout the Earth’s history. The relationships between diverse microbial metabolic activities and isotopic signatures in biominerals forming within these microbialites are key to understanding modern...

Isotope evidence for the coupled iron and carbon cycles 1.4 billion years ago

Noble gases are chemically inert and, as such, act as unique tracers of physical processes over geological timescales. The isotopic composition of atmospheric xenon, the heaviest stable noble gas, evolved following mass-dependent fractionation throughout the Hadean and Archaean aeons...

Terrawatch: Rare gas points to deep nebula origins for Earth

[The Guardian] A rare isotope of helium, bubbling up along mid-ocean ridges, is proving to be a vital clue to our planet’s origins. Just 2kg of helium-3 – enough to fill a balloon the size of your desk – leaks out of the Earth each year. Very...

Why we still don’t yet know how bad climate migration will get

[Vox] As sea levels rise, temperatures become unbearable, and disasters grow more severe, tens of millions of people may not be able to stay where they are. Beyond the human toll it will exact, this climate-driven migration is poised to...
