New issue of Geochemical Perspectives: Sulfur Biogeochemical Cycle of Marine Sediments

On the background of his own studies of the sulfur cycle over the past forty years, Bo Barker Jørgensen discusses important aspects of the microbiology and geochemistry of sulfur transformations in the seabed. Mixed with anecdotes, he reminisces how the field developed, with exciting discoveries and occasional failures. There is particular focus on experimental approaches and their use to understand sulfate reduction, sulfide oxidation, and disproportionation. Interactions with the methane cycle and with general mineralisation processes are described, and the information provided by stable sulfur isotopes is discussed. The final sections analyse global aspects and future perspectives of the sulfur cycle.

Geochemical Perspectives is an EAG open access publication. The print version of this issue will soon be mailed to EAG members who have opted to receive the print copy.

Council Elections: cast your vote

EAG members are currently being asked to cast their vote to select three new councillors from amongst the six candidates proposed.

Our councillors participate in discussions, decisions, and initiatives, and therefore play a crucial role in determining the future of the society. Participation is essential to the success of these elections and we thank our members for taking a few minutes to vote.

EAG members: If you haven't yet voted, please do so by 3 November. Your personalized link to vote was sent by email on 11 October. If you have not received it, please contact the EAG Office.

New editors at Geochemical Perspectives Letters

We are delighted to welcome Juan Liu (Peking University) and Claudine Stirling (University of Otago) to the Geochemical Perspectives Letters editorial board.

Juan Liu's research interests focus on molecular mechanisms of electron transfer at the microbe-mineral interface and related biogeochemical processes, mineral-water interactions and their influence on mineral transformations, and contaminant transformation in environmental and biological systems.

Claudine Stirling's research uses trace elements and their isotope systems to track a wide range of processes on Earth in order to better understand the dynamic interactions between the oceans and atmosphere during episodes of major climate change. She is especially interested in the stable isotope tracers of “bioactive” metals, such iron, zinc and cadmium, and of “redox-sensitive” metals, such as uranium, with an emphasis on technique development using MC-ICPMS and ultra-clean laboratory methods.

We would also like to thank the departing editors - Karim Benzerara, Cin-Ty Lee, Sophie Opfergelt, and Simon Redfern - for all their hard work during their terms on the board and for their contributions to the success of the journal.

A genetic classification of the tholeiitic and calc-alkaline magma series

The concept of the ‘magma series’ and the distinction between alkaline, calc-alkaline and tholeiitic trends has been a cornerstone in igneous petrology since the early 20th century, and encodes fundamental information...

Physical weathering by glaciers enhances silicon mobilisation and isotopic fractionation

Glacial meltwaters export substantial quantities of dissolved and dissolvable amorphous silicon (DSi and ASi), providing an essential nutrient for downstream diatoms. Evidence suggests that glacially exported DSi is isotopically...

Subsurface particle transport shapes the deep critical zone in a granitoid watershed

Understanding the inter-relationships between chemical weathering and physical erosion remains a first order puzzle in Earth surface dynamics. In the Río Icacos watershed in the Luquillo Critical Zone Observatory, Puerto Rico, where...

Diffusional fractionation of helium isotopes in silicate melts

Estimating Helium (He) concentration and isotope composition of the mantle requires quantifying He loss during magma degassing. The knowledge of diffusional He isotope fractionation in silicate melts may be essential to constrain the...

Martian Blues: Did Planet’s Size Affect Its Ability To Hold Onto Water?

[Forbes] We have a fleet of robots seeking out habitability on Mars, but is the planet too small for life in the first place? A new study suggests that the Red Planet, which is half the diameter of Earth, might be too small to hold on to substantial amounts of water in the long term. Without water, life as we know it is a lot harder to imagine. We certainly know that parts of Mars...

Capsule of 1765 air reveals ancient histories hidden under Antarctic ice

[The Guardian] An ampoule of Antarctic air from the year 1765 forms the centrepiece of a new exhibition that reveals the hidden histories contained in polar ice to visitors attending the Cop26 climate conference in Glasgow. The artist Wayne Binitie has spent the past five years undertaking an extraordinary collaboration with scientists of...

Terrawatch: how climate change alters impact of volcanic eruptions

[The Guardian] It’s well known that volcanic eruptions alter the climate but can human-made climate change alter volcanic eruptions? Curiously, the answer appears to be yes. When the Philippine volcano Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991, the resulting sulphuric acid haze suppressed global temperatures by 0.5C for more than a year. Very explosive eruptions like...

Perseverance Sees Evidence of Flash Floods in Jezero Crater

[Universe Today] Nearly eight months into the Perseverance rover’s mission on Mars, researchers have confirmed that Jezero crater is (as was believed) an ancient lakebed, but more significantly, that it once experienced powerful flash floods that pushed boulders from tens of miles upstream into the crater basin. Years before Perseverance ever left Earth, orbital...

Zeolites’ Isotopes Defy Nature – New Potential for Carbon Capture and Storage

[SciTechDaily] Zeolites could be considered as nature’s workhorse. Filled with microscopic holes and channels, these ultraporous minerals can soak up environmental contaminants, filter drinking water, manage nuclear waste, and even absorb carbon dioxide (CO2). Now, in the first study of its kind, Northwestern University researchers have analyzed ancient...

The world’s only source of critical seawater samples could dry up

[Science] If you are a scientist studying how carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are altering the ocean, you likely know who Andrew Dickson is—and can’t get along without him. Over the past 32 years, Dickson, a marine chemist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, has sent some 150,000 bottles of carefully characterized seawater to researchers...

Tour of Jupiter’s Trojans could reveal Solar System’s chaotic origin

[Science] Jupiter is a planetary bully, tossing other bodies aside with its outsize gravitational tug. But two clusters of asteroids precede and follow Jupiter at a respectful distance, like cowering children, held in a stable place by the pull of the gas giant and the Sun. Astronomers have long been puzzled by these rocks, called the Trojans, which look very...
