A field course in Tenerife: the importance of understanding physical volcanology for a geochemist!
[By Martha Papadopoulou] During my first years as an undergraduate geology student I developed a passion for fieldwork and fieldtrips. In my experience, geology is best taught and understood in the field and therefore, I consider them inseparable to the nature of a geologist. While advancing in geology, I also developed a passion for igneous rock...

AGU Chapman Conference on Asian Monsoons, Washington DC, January 5-9, 2020
[By Katrina Nilsson-Kerr] In early January, sub-zero temperatures and long dark days aren’t exactly conducive to stimulating and energizing oneself. However, in Washington D.C. this year, my January Blues swiftly disappeared whilst attending the AGU Chapman Conference on the Evolution of the Monsoon, Biosphere and Mountain Building in...

Oxidation of green rust by anoxygenic phototrophic Fe(II)-oxidising bacteria
Green rust (GR) may have been a primary mineral phase during the deposition of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides in Precambrian iron formations (IFs). However, the transformation pathways of GR into secondary mineral phases in IFs remain...

Metamorphic evolution of carbonate-hosted microbial biosignatures
Microbial biosignature assemblages captured within mineral substrates experience extreme pressures (P) and temperatures (T) during rock burial and metamorphism. We subjected natural microbial biofilms hosted within...

Redox transfer at subduction zones: insights from Fe isotopes in the Mariana forearc
Subduction zones are active sites of chemical exchange between the Earth’s surface and deep interior and play a fundamental role in regulating planet habitability. However, the mechanisms by which redox sensitive elements...

Hafnium isotopic disequilibrium during sediment melting and assimilation
Identification of juvenile and mature crustal sources in granite formation relies on radiogenic isotopic systems such as Sm-Nd and Lu-Hf and assumes isotope systems reach equilibrium between the melt and residual phases...

Oldest crater on Earth precisely dated
[The Independent] Scientists think they have identified the precise date a meteorite hit the Earth and created its oldest preserved impact structure. The Yarrabubba crater in Western Australia appears to be 200 million years older than its closest challenger, the researchers write. The site was hit...

Mining the sea floor for precious metals needed for electric car batteries could lead to 'irreversible damage' to marine ecosystems, scientists warn
[Daily Mail] Mining the sea floor for precious metals such as zinc and cobalt could lead to 'irreversible' damage to marine ecosystems, scientists warn. Demand for battery powered devices such as electric cars has created a drive to mine the cobalt rich seabed, say researchers from...

Oldest material on Earth discovered
[BBC] Scientists analysing a meteorite have discovered the oldest material known to exist on Earth. They found dust grains within the space rock - which fell to Earth in the 1960s - that are as much as 7.5 billion years old. The oldest of the dust grains were formed in stars that roared to life...

Study finds shock rise in levels of potent greenhouse gas
[The Guardian] Efforts to reduce levels of one potent greenhouse gas appear to be failing, according to a study. Scientists had expected to find a dramatic reduction in levels of the hydrofluorocarbon HFC-23 in the atmosphere after India and China, two of the main sources, reported in...

Asteroid That Killed the Dinosaurs Was Great for Bacteria
[The New York Times]The asteroid moved 24 times faster than a rifle bullet as it struck Earth some 66 million years ago. Its supersonic shock wave flattened trees across North and South America, and its heat wave sparked incomprehensibly large forest fires. The event lofted so much debris into...

Water is unexpectedly disappearing from the surface of Mars, scientists announce
[The Independent] Water is unexpectedly disappearing from the surface of Mars, scientists have said. The process is happening far more quickly than our current understanding of the red planet would suggest, say scientists. It is also not in line with what past observations would indicate should...
