Wallace S. Broecker: 1931–2019
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Wallace S. Broecker on 18 February 2019 at the age of 87. Known affectionately as the "Grandfather of Climate Science", Wally was an extraordinary force for scientific innovation. He was among the pioneers of radiocarbon and isotope dating, and was also the first to recognise what he called the Ocean Conveyor Belt and its critical role in climate fluctuations.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Wally Broecker received numerous awards, including the National Medal of Science from President Bill Clinton, the Urey and the V.M. Goldschmidt Awards. Wally authored and co-authored over 500 journal articles and 11 books, including two contributions to EAG’s journal Geochemical Perspectives, “The Carbon Cycle and Climate Change: Memoirs of my 60 years in Science” and our most recent issue “CO2: Earth's Climate Driver".
Wally will be greatly missed by the entire community. Our thoughts are with his wife Elizabeth and his family, friends and colleagues.

Elements February issue: Planet Mercury
Mercury is unique among terrestrial planets because of its very high metal/silicate ratio. The NASA MESSENGER mission ended in 2015 and significantly advanced our understanding of the deep structure of the planet as well as our comprehension of Mercury’s volcanic history and crust formation. The European Space Agency (ESA) recently launched the BepiColombo mission in October 2018. The “Planet Mercury” issue summarizes the latest developments in light of MESSENGER data and perspectives for the BepiColombo mission on internal structures and surface processes, based on insights from geophysics, geochemistry, igneous and experimental petrology and volcanology.

Current EAG members will soon receive their print copies of Elements. Members also have online access to all back issues (user id = email address, password = EAG membership number). To find your membership number, login to your member area.

Radiogenic Ca isotopes confirm post-formation K depletion of lower crust
Heat flow studies suggest that the lower crust has low concentrations of heat-producing elements. This could be due to either (i) greater fractions of basaltic rock at depth or (ii) metamorphic depletion of radioactive elements from rocks with...

Attending the world’s largest geoscience conference: EAG Ambassadors at AGU18
[By Gordon Inglis and Emily Dearing Crampton-Flood] The Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) is by far the largest conference that a geochemist might attend in their career. The 2018 AGU Fall Meeting took place in Washington D.C. in December and EAG Early Career Science ambassadors Emily Dearing Crampton-Flood and Gordon Inglis were among the many thousands of delegates there. We asked them to share some of their...
