2020 Award Nominations Now Open
Recognition of scientific excellence at all stages of one's career is crucial. Should you know of any deserving colleagues, nominate them for an EAG Award, the Geochemistry Fellowship or the R. Berner Lecture. Information and instructions on how to submit a nomination are available here.
Deadline for GS/EAG Fellows nominations: 31 October
Deadline for EAG Award nominations: 15 November
Urey Award: recognises scientific excellence over a career.
Science Innovation Award (named after Werner Stumm for his work in low-temperature and surface geochemistry): recognises scientists within 30 years of the start of their PhD.
Houtermans Award: recognises scientists within 12 years of the start of their PhD.
Geochemistry Fellowship: recognises scientists who have made major contributions to the field of geochemistry.
R. Berner Lecture: recognises mid-career scientists. The lecture will be presented at the Goldschmidt2020 conference.

Elements August issue: Weathering Across the Earth Sciences
Weathering processes play and integral role across a range of geoscience fields. Chemical weathering – the loss of mass by mineral dissolution and export – is key to understanding how Earth’s skin functions. Weathering is the starting point for the biogeochemical cycles of most elements. It determines river and groundwater chemistry and provides nutrients to ecosystems. Weathering alters rock structure and susceptibility to erosion; soil and landscape evolution cannot be understood without considering the role of chemical weathering...

2018 Distinguished Lecture Tour: Jim McQuaid's Eastern adventure
[By Jim McQuaid] When I was first told that I had the honour of being the 2018 EAG Distinguished Lecturer, I did wonder how I would present atmospheric science to geochemists. It turned out to be much easier than I thought. I originally did a chemistry degree and then moved into atmospheric chemistry, so I am a chemist “by birth”. My current research involves a great deal of geochemistry, part of it studying the...

Abiogenesis not required to explain the origin of volcanic-hydrothermal hydrocarbons
Abiotic formation of n-alkane hydrocarbons has been postulated to occur within Earth's crust. Apparent evidence was primarily based on uncommon carbon and hydrogen isotope distribution patterns that set methane…

Loss of immiscible nitrogen from metallic melt explains Earth’s missing nitrogen
Nitrogen and carbon are essential elements for life, and their relative abundances in planetary bodies are important for understanding planetary evolution and habitability. The high C/N ratio in the bulk silicate Earth (BSE) relative to chondrites...
